The Question is: I have two systems in a cluster, 1 system is running Openvms 7.1 on a Alpha 4100 box and the other 1 running 6.2 on a Alpha 8200, is it possible to just switch the system disk without any other advance configuration so now I have 7.1 running on my Alpha 8200 and 6.2 running on my Alpha 4100 ? The Answer is : An AlphaServer 4100 (and any other EV56-based system) requires the OpenVMS Alpha V6.2-1H3 release, or the V7.1 or later releases. Various AlphaServer 8000 series systems (8200, 8400) can have differing version requirements. Specific hardware, such as UltraSCSI, may also require particular OpenVMS versions or ECO kits be present, as well. If the current version is supported for the platform, then yes, the system disks can generally be swapped and the system can be rebooted. Reconfiguration of such things as the DECnet controllers and embedded Ethernet addresses and any system-specific configuration steps in the site-specific startup command procedures will be required -- controller names and device configurations can differ between systems. You may also need to reset the console environment variables specifying the target device and system root, obviously.
