Font substitution in Postscript files?

The Question is:

 
When I convert PS printer fonts to Vax fonts,
do the characters get remapped?
 
We are having problem with character
substitution i cross platform PS files that
go from Vax to Win 95 or Vax to Macintosh.

The Answer is :

 
  What happens depends highly on the particular converters used,
  and on the particulars of the Postscript file transfer and the
  font substitution scheme used.
