The Question is: Can I upgrade (not install) OpenVMS directly from OVMS V6.2 to V7.1? The Release Notes (for V7.1-1H1) says I cannot, but my DEC sales people say I can. What does 1H1, 1H2, 1H3 represent anyway? Does 1H3 magically allow the 6.2 -> 7.1 upgrade where 1H1 didn't. Thanks. The Answer is : Please do not ask questions answered in the OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) -- please see the FAQ section entitled "MGMT16. What are the OpenVMS version upgrade paths?" for information on the OpenVMS upgrade paths available, as well as information on limited hardware releases. Also please see the documentation for the OpenVMS release in question -- the documentation for each OpenVMS release clearly indicates the previous release(s) that the upgrade can be applied to. Given that the system is apparently currently running OpenVMS Alpha V6.2, the only reason to upgrade to the V7.1-1H2 limited hardware release (V7.1-1H1 was superceded by V7.1-1H2) is for those configurations specifically requiring new hardware or new hardware configuration support. The limited hardware releases do not contain a roll-up of ECO kits. V7.1-1H1 and V7.1-1H2 do not contain any general fixes for V7.1, and adding only those changes necessary to support specific to the new hardware and new configuration support. Given the availability of V7.1-2 and V7.2, any requirement for an upgrade to V7.1-1H1 or to V7.1-1H2 seems questionable -- there may well be some circumstances where it is warranted, but additional information would be required before the Wizard could recommend it.
