The Question is: I am working on my first VMS migration from VAX (VAX 7760, OVMS V6.2) to Alpha (Alpha 8400, OVMS V7.1/7.2). What is the easiest way to migrate the Authorize info (I've already found that the SYSUAF.DAT files have different formats)? What is the easiest way to migrate the print and batch queue defintions? (I haven't been able to find anything in the VMS literature about this - am I looking in the wrong place?) Thank you. The Answer is : The supported approach typically involves upgrading all nodes to the same OpenVMS version, or to versions that are supported in the same OpenVMS Cluster. That specific OpenVMS versions can coexist in a cluster requires that the core file organizations of these files -- and contents themselves -- are entirely- or upward-compatible, or that some form of tool exists in OpenVMS to track the old and the new files. In this case, the Wizard would generally recommend configuring and using a mixed-architecture cluster for the duration of the migration. This configuration can share application and system files, including the SYSUAF, RIGHTSLIST, NET*PROXY, and associated system files. If you choose to not use a cluster, you can simply copy the files over to the new node -- the procedure is effectively the same as for merging nodes into a cluster, and the information on this topic is included in an appendix of the cluster manual. (Given that you will have few entries in the database on the new OpenVMS Alpha nodes, the merging process is simple.) At V6.1 on OpenVMS VAX and at V6.2 on OpenVMS Alpha, the format of the proxy database changed -- the old NETPROXY database is typically still present, and the new NET$PROXY database is populated from the older NETPROXY file using the provided SYS$SYSTEM:CONVERT_PROXY.EXE tool. NB: When an OpenVMS VAX V6.1 node was present in a cluster with an OpenVMS Alpha node running V6.1 or earlier, all proxy database management was performed only from the OpenVMS VAX V6.1 node. When an OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 node was present in a cluster with an OpenVMS VAX node running an OpenVMS version prior to V6.1, all proxy management was performed from the OpenVMS Alpha node.
