The Question is: config of ppp. i recently took one of our older alphas home for support. read all the stuff and help files on pppd. i installed the drivers with the sysman utility. i connected via modem to a server at the office, but as soon as i press return to get username i get the following: error reading from tta0: sys-f-partescape, partial escape pppd-f-abort, fatal error encountered, operation terminated. i reread all the manuals. pppd show port, says: port not configured, showing defaults. i cannot find anything on what i am supposed to configure. i have used pppd set for some of the parameters, still get port not configured. one good thing from all this. i've spent years developing for VMS and usually can find what i need in the docs. this time i'm online searching and i found this faq page and this wizards page. in going through both looking at all the ppp and ucx stuff i saw other interesting topics and many have helped me get more usage out of my VMS systems in the last two days. way cool, i like this online archive help stuff. The Answer is : The specific model of Alpha system and serial line will be of interest here, as is the baud rate. It appears that a character was lost and the terminal driver returned an error on the communications port used for PPP. The utility should not fail when that happens, this would appear to be a bug. The maintainer of PPP is surprised that failing as the line is supposed to be set to pasthru. You will want to ensure the port on ttao has the alternate typeahead buffer enabled before trying to make a connection. Certain systems such as the DEC 3000 series and the console lines on certain other systems are known to have baud rate limitations -- faster baud rates overwhelm the capabilities of the underlying hardwere, as the hardware was designed for an interactive user and not as a network connection. To verify the underlying hardware path operates as expected, attempt to make a dialup connection via SET HOST/DTE. If problems persist, please contact the Compaq Customer Support Center.
