The Question is: We have two Alpha servers that run pay roll, and student registration. We want to have them both running in support of each in a cluster, so that if one drops off-line the other keeps going without data loss. Is this with in the scope of clustering itse lf, or is there going to be extra hardware to buy for this project? The Answer is : This is well within the scope of clustering. Please see the following URL for a synopsis of what a cluster can do: http://www.openvms.digital.com/openvms/products/clusters/index.html Assuming that the systems have network hardware and Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, or similar connecting them, a cluster is quite possible with no additional hardware. Your specific requirements may or may not warrant additional hardware. A few of the potential options include the following: o No new hardware. Simply license and configure the cluster. o An upgrade to V7.1-1H2, V7.1-2, V7.2, or later, and connecting together one or more existing SCSI buses. o Additional hardware, such as Fibre Channel, CI, Memory Channel, or otherwise, and HSZ or similar storage controllers. Exactly what additional hardware -- if any -- will depends highly on what hardware you have, and what you want to do with the configuration. Also, please see the OpenVMS Cluster manuals in the documentation set.
