The Question is: Hello wizard, I'm trying to connect a 56k US Robotics modem to a port on a DECserver 300, yes I know the 300 does not support modem control but the powers that be tell me it is possible. (they can't tell me how to do it ??) I have looked at all your relevant documentation but can find nothing for my specific problem. I would very much appriciate any help you con give on this subject. The Answer is : You will want to be aware that the proposed configuration is insecure, and can permit unauthorized users to access your system, and can allow authorized users to obtain additional unauthorized system access. "Limited modem control" is the most common, while "full modem control" is seldom used and provides little extra benefit. If there is no modem control, there is no way for the modem to signal the host or DECserver that an incoming call is being received, no way for the host or DECserver to disconnect the call on logout, no way to disconnect the session when the modem carrier drops, and no way for the modem to avoid answering when the host or DECserver is unavailable. The typical approach used when modem control is not available is to force the modem to always answer (ignore modem control signals), and the host or DECserver to operate without knowledge that a modem is connected. This is generally performed via settings within the modem, though solutions involving rewiring the serial line connection -- by shorting specific pins on the modem -- are also obviously feasible.
