The Question is: How do Decserver300 Terminal servers load from a Decnetplus V host? We upgraded recently on a test LAN and it seems to work but we do not know how or why? We are running DS300 V2.2c and will upgrade our Live LAN soon and want to be sure Live servers will also work. The Answer is : Terminal servers and other similar network devices request downloads and maintenace operations via the Maintenace and Operations Protocol (MOP) protocol. MOP is traditionally thought of as part of a DECnet implementation, but it is also available on hosts not using DECnet. Outside of maintenance-related functions (download requests, upline dump requests, remote console access), LAT devices do not typcally use MOP protocols -- in particular, the LAT protocol is completely unrelated to DECnet. MOP service requests can be processed by DECnet Phase IV hosts, by DECnet-Plus (formerly known as DECnet/OSI) hosts, and by LANCP. The OpenVMS Wizard typically recommends LANCP, as it avoids dependence on any particular network transport -- it works with DECnet Phase IV, with DECnet-Plus, and with TCP/IP Services. LANCP is available in OpenVMS V6.2 and later.
