The Question is: I have encountered a problem with several Compaq notebooks that will not finish the shutdown or reboot process once Pathworks 7.1a is installed. The machines are Compaq Presario 1255 notebooks with LinkSys 10/100 Ethernet PC cards. Uninstalling Pathworks 7.1a will allow them to shutdown/reboot again. Can you give me some insight into the cause of this problem? While reading some of the questions in the Ask The Wizard Archive, I ran into a couple of questions concerning Pathworks that I might have partial solutions for. In the case of some Win95/98 machines that "blue screen, You may be able to continue normally." I have found that disabling powersaving features on the machines can sometimes prevent the occurance of this error. On Windows NT, after installing Pathworks, you may get the error message "Initialization failure in Kernal32.dll or User32.dll". This problem occures normally when a screen saver attempts to start. It can be fixed by editing the NT registry. The error des cription and solution can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q184/8/02.asp Thankyou, Charles E Wysong CTI Inc. The Answer is : Over a year ago, the OpenVMS Wizard received several reports stating that the PC would not finish shutdown or reboot when PATHWORKS 32 V7.0a was installed. A common denominator among these reports was that the PCs were all running Windows 95 OSR2. In most cases, the reported problem was fixed by an update to the PATHWORKS 32 module DECCORE.VXD. The fix is included in PATHWORKS 32 V7.1 and V7.1a releases. In one instance, the DECCORE update did not address the problem; the solution turned out to be a bios upgrade on the laptop. Also, as you have already pointed out, disabling powersaving features on the machines can sometimes prevent the occurance of this error.
