How to perform an OpenVMS upgrade?

The Question is:

 
I have to upgrade a mv4000 from VMS ver. 5.5 to Ver. 5.5-2 to be able to
install the Y2K patch.
Question is: Can I do an upgrade when the system is up and running or do I
have to do a standalone boot from tape created by STABACKIT.
The 5.5-2 version is also on tape as a save-set.

  Please read the directions included with the V5.5-2 installation kit.
  This documentation will provide you with information on the steps you
  must perform prior to the upgrade, during the upgrade, and after the
  upgrade has completed -- both for standalone and for clustered systems.
