The Question is: We are upgrading from v6.1 to v7.2 for Y2K. Will the Fortran programs currently running need to be recompiled for the new version of the OS? Current Fortran Licenses: FORTRAN DEC FORTRAN-HPO DEC FORTRAN-IV DEC FORTRAN90 DEC Also, is it possible to install 7.2 onto the following: Volume label Free blocks Free Space Total Space "AXPVMSSYS" 416292 213 MB 1.05GB Thank you. The Answer is : There is generally no need to recompile or relink user-mode applications when performing an OpenVMS upgrade -- OpenVMS is quite compatible across software upgrades. That said, recompilation with newer compilers can take advantage of improvements made to the compiler code generation, and can load newer object code if the applications are linked against OpenVMS object libraries. (Most applications should link against the OpenVMS shareable images, very few should link against object libraries.) Code that uses privileged-mode (executive or kernel) routines or data structures may require changes and/or recompilation and relinking. Please see the OpenVMS Alpha Upgrade and Installation documentation for specific upgrade requirements -- from the experience of the OpenVMS Wizard, the current 1.05 GB (RZ26?) system disk will be tight. The V7.2 upgrade manual is presently available at: http://www.openvms.digital.com:8000/72final/6522/6522pro.html The V7.2 upgrade will require a maximum of 360,000 blocks free on the system disk, possibly less. Please see: http://www.openvms.digital.com:8000/72final/6522/6522pro_006.html #overview_upgrade_chap http://www.openvms.digital.com:8000/72final/6522/6522pro_006.html #check_size_disk Please see the OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for pointers to Y2K readiness information and to the application and system Y2K testing procedures recommended by OpenVMS Engineering. (The OpenVMS FAQ is accessable at the Ask The Wizard web page.) The OpenVMS Wizard would also recommend the release notes and new features manuals for V6.2 through V7.2, inclusive -- this will help you avoid various known and documented restrictions, and to take best advantage of new features and changes that have been made to OpenVMS. ECO kits are based on PCSI starting with OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 and later. Prior to this, VMSINSTAL ECO kits were used. Do not attempt to use VMSINSTAL ECO kits on OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 or later.
