The Question is: We're trying to find an HP printer library for the above system, capable of printing Polish characters. I believe that it needs to conform to ISO 8859-2. Currently, characters can be held in the system correctly, but cannot be printed as this character se t re-uses existing characters. The Answer is : HP has manufactured many models of printers, with very different costs and capabilities and requirements. Specific identification of the HP printer will be required, and likely also the assistance of HP support. Printer character sets are generally obtained directly from the printer manufacturer, or from another organization explicitly designated by the printer manufacturer. Given that characters are reportedly available and operating correctly in the OpenVMS system, and that the printer is apparently remapping the characters, it would initially appear that the printer does not support the character set, or that the printer has not selected the appropriate character set for the operation. For information on selecting alternative character sets on the printer, please see the printer documentation or contact the printer manufacturer. Options for selecting character sets on various printers may include a setup option in the printer configuration mechanism, or a sequence sent from the host to the printer to request a particular character set be used for printing, or the download of a character set into the printer. If the printer lacks the character set, please contact the printer manufacturer. If the printer has the character set and requires a sequence to select it, please see the previous discussions of device control libraries here in Ask The Wizard -- you will need to explicitly send the appropriate printer-specific sequence to the printer to select the necessary character set, and possibly a reset sequence to return to another character set after the printout. If the printer requires a downloaded character set, the appropriate (and potentially printer specific) character set must be obtained from the printer manufacturer or designated organization. Please contact the Compaq Customer Support Center for assistance with device control libraries.
