The Question is: Dear Sir I would like to ask you about ther performance fo Decnet protocol when compares to another well known protocols like TCP , IPX on LAN and WAN. Moreover, which concept is better in the performance issue between transparent and non-transparent task to task especially WAN. Thanks very much . Regards Wichaya Charnlertlakha The Answer is : Network protocols are network protocols, and all network protocols must perform the same basic operations -- the performance of network protocols intended for similar purposes will all tend to be rather similar. You can use tools such as DTS/DTR to compare the performance of DECnet links, and tools such as the ICMP PING tool on IP networks. Most (all?) modern network protocols will each provide similar portions of the available hardware bandwidth, typically closely tracking the available hardware bandwidth underlying the connections. Specific protocols have advantages and disadvantages, and a discussion of what application requirements are present will be required as part of any decision. DECnet, for instance, supports remote file access via FAL, an application that is not available on other platforms. UDP/IP, for instance, is well-suited to multipoint datagram communications. "Transparent" and "non-transparent" communications are DECnet concepts, and indicate little more than the level of involvement in the DECnet connection request and connection reception processing.
