The Question is: If I want to upgrade a vms system from version A to version B do I have to upgrade both the Base and the user licenses? The Answer is : Only licenses with release dates or termination dates need to be changed for upgrades. Use the SHOW LICENSE/BRIEF command and check the two rightmost columns. If they all contain "(none)" then you don't have a problem -- this is the normal case. If you find dates listed, please call your local Compaq Customer Support Center to work out the status of the specific products and licenses involved. The OpenVMS license release date is presently stored in the system data cell VMS$GQ_LICENSE_DATE -- on OpenVMS Alpha V7.2, the SDA utility shows the following information as the product release date for the core PAKs: EXAMINE/TIME VMS$GQ_LICENSE_DATE 1-JUL-1996 00:00:00.00 Layered product PAKs can (and often do) use different dates.
