Tape media detection on MOUNT and INITIALIZE?

The Question is:

 
In running a backup procedure to the built-in
DAT drive on an AlphaServer 4100, how can I
check for the presence of a tape in the drive
before attempting to initialise or mount?
Alternatively, how can I do a mount with a
timeout? This is all being done with DCL scripts
to provide a backup where a number of savesets
are copied on to the tape which is in a cycle of
10.

The Answer is :

 
  Neither MOUNT/NOASSIST nor INITIALIZE will wait (forever) on a missing
