The Question is: How do I add domain name resolution to a Digital Alpha Server 2000 4/200? We currently use an Ethernet -Windows NT network running DHCP and non of our workstations have static IPs, setting up each workstation as a host would be impossible. What are your suggestions?. We have already attempted to put both the DNS and DHCP servers in the UCX host file, but as you are probably aware, that didn't work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris Sater (314) 577-1696 The Answer is : OpenVMS TCP/IP Services V5.0 and V5.0A do not provide a DHCP client, only a DHCP Server. DNS resolution is available, as well. Support for a DHCP Client for OpenVMS may appear in a future release of TCP/IP Services -- in the interrum, static IP addresses are required by OpenVMS TCP/IP Services IP host systems. In addition to this statement, another reader suggests that the question may pertain to either basic DNS operations, or involve a question of how to use DNS in conjunction with nodes using DHCP clients -- if so, the DHCP clients must register their TCP/IP addresses with the local (usually) WINS server, and the DNS server (one capable of utilizing the information in the WINS database) be used to resolve the names. As TCP/IP Services does not presently (as of V5.0A) support DNS resolution of WINS information, the specifics and the details are left to the reader(s) and to the Wizard(s) for the particular product(s) used. Also be aware that TCP/IP Services does not currently resolve the (very dynamic) DHCP-assigned addresses in the context of proxies and such -- when posted, topic 2901 will contain additional information on DHCP operations. The OpenVMS Wizard would tend to expect this to improve when DHCP client support is added to TCP/IP Services (as is planned).
