The Question is: Dear Wizard, I have an old VAXstation 3100 M38 running Open VMS 6.0. I am trying to connect my PC via serial port to the VAX. I have purchased all the necessary cables and connectors from DEC. As for terminal emulation software I am using XTALK, but I have not any su ccess making connection. Please let me know if there is some kind of setup I need to run on VAX or some flag I need to set to make this connection work. Your help is much appreciated. New to VMS The Answer is : There is nothing in particular that would prevent this and nothing in particular that requires unusual configuration on the OpenVMS VAX or VAXstation 3100 series, so the OpenVMS Wizard would assume that there is a local communications or wiring error, or a problem on the PC setup. If you wish to enable use of the serial console, turn the system and all expansion units off. You will want to set the S3 switch on the back of the system enclosure upward to enable the serial console. (S3 set downward selects the graphics console, which is the default.) Connect the serial cable to the printer port. Set the serial line baud rate to 9600 baud on the terminal or terminal emulator. Turn the system on. If this fails, you likely have a cabling problem, or a problem with the PC or the PC serial port or the PC terminal emulator. As one option, try a real serial terminal such as a terminal from one of the VT series terminal families. One potential problem on the PC end is the use of two different DB9 nine-pin connectors. The PC series uses one pinout, and the MicroVAX series uses another. See the OpenVMS FAQ for details on this, and on the MMJ connection pinout, and related discussions. Obviously, using the appropriate graphics display monitor as the console will be easiest, and will provide you with the most flexibility and the most capabilities. The serial console and OpenVMS serial line access in general is rather limited when compared with access via X Windows (DECwindows).
