The Question is: I have some brand-new never out of the box DLT IV tapes. On my TZ887 connected to an SCSI card in an OpenVMS 7.1-2 system, I get "parity errors" when trying to initialize. (Either with or without the density override switch). If I use a Quantum 4700 on a Solaris system to write to the tapes first, (a) the solaris system doesn't complain and (b) I can then write to them on the OpenVMS system. This is really pain. How can I can I get the OpenVMS system to just write to the tapes? The Answer is : OpenVMS is not particularly involved in the generation of parity errors and merely reports those that it encounters -- it would appear to be a hardware problem, or questionable media, or media that is already initialized at a density incompatible with that of the drive in use.
