Incorrect new mail count in MAIL?

The Question is:

 
When I go into MAIL in VMS, I receive a message telling the number of new
messages. This number is always 16 unit too high (for example: if I have 2
new messages, it states 18 new messages). There must be a problem with a
counter elsewhere. How can I get
this all right again?
