The Question is: We recently upgraded to Version V7.1-1H2 from 5.5. One of our systems has a number of data directories which are backed up in a command file using $BACKUP/MEDIA=COMPACT/LOG/VERIFY/NOASSIST - /EXCLUDE=(*.BJL,*.COM,*.QKG,*.DIR) EXPRD$DATA:*.* TAPE:'SET_NAM' - /NOREWIND/LABEL='LAB_NAM' - /JOURNAL=EXPRD$DATA:'SET_NAM'.JBL after the tape is allocated and mounted. exprd$data is a logical pointing to the data to be backed up. set_nam is a symbol of the save set name. lab_nam is a symbol of the label name. If the user wishes to backup a second directory the logical exprd$data and the symbol set_nam is modified and this command is looped back to. The journal for the second backup is empty and no data is copied to the tape, even though there is data to be ba ckup. I noticed that another person had problems with BACKUP/JOURNAL on V7.2 and you had said this was a known problem is that version. Do we need a patch for the backup utility or is there some problem with my logic. The Answer is : It is not entirely clear if this is the known problem with BACKUP/JOURNAL. (A fix is being made available for BACKUP.) The OpenVMS Wizard would recommend upgrading to OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 or V7.2-1, and to not stop/stay at OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-1H1 or V7.1-1H2.
