Determining graphics monitor compatibility?

The Question is:

 
How we can get a picture on our VAXstation 4000 monitor?
 
We have a legacy VAXstation 4000/60 running OpenVMS 6.1 from which we need
to archive critically sensitive data files.  It was once connected to a DEC
VRC21-KA/K4 color monitor, but that monitor is now used on an AlphaServer
1000a running OpenVMS 7.1.  Me
anwhile, we've tried hooking up the VAXstation to a Compaq V75 and a Gateway
EV700, both with negative results.  The units connect and power up OK but
there is no picture.  Yet either unit works fine on a PC.  What are we doing
wrong?
