Unable to boot from distribution CD-ROM?

The Question is:

 
Hi,
I am trying to make a backup of our system disks but cannot get to the $$$
after booting from the shevrons.I boot from the CD ROM drive which is DKA400
but then it just hangs there.It happens to both our machines the alpha 1000
4/266 and the alphastation
4/233.Is there any other way going about it or connections are at fault
somewhere.

The Answer is :

 
  Please contact the Compaq Customer Support center, as it would
  appear you have a configuration or hardware problem, or a problem
  with the CD-ROM drive, or potentially an unsupported CD-ROM drive,
  or outdated firmware.  Specific additional information on the
  configurations will be required.  Details on the CD-ROM 512-byte
