Avoiding/repairing corrupted BACKUP saveset?

The Question is:

 
I wish to move a backup save set file (.bck) between two VMS servers via an
intermediary Unix box. How should i perform the FTP copies sot hat the save
set is usable at the destination. I have tried ASCII and Binary trasnfer
types but I alawys end up with
 a file which is not recognised as a backup ave set by VMS at the remote
end. Both VMS servers use VMS 7.1-2 and UCX 4.2
