The Question is: What is the largest disk drive supported by OpenVMS 6.2-1h3 on an Alpha 2100a using HSZ40-B and StorageWorks shelves? We are currently using RZ29-B (4.3gb drives in the shelves) The Answer is : Beyond the general disk capacity limits referenced in the OpenVMS FAQ, this question is best routed to the StorageWorks team for assistance, as the particular StorageWorks shelf and controller (and the associated revisions) involved will be of central interest -- more recent disks can have increased thermal disipation requirements, and shelf upgrades or replacements can be required. (Recent StorageWorks devices are typically based on UltraSCSI or Fibre Channel...) UltraSCSI configurations using the KZPBA and UltraSCSI shelves are available for this release of OpenVMS, with the application of the ALPSCSI06_062 (or later) ECO. With UltraSCSI configurations, 18 GB and larger disk spindles are available. (OpenVMS V7.2 and later provide for smaller disk cluster factors, which can be quite useful with these larger disks. Disk cluster factors of 18 and 36 blocks are not unusual on larger disks on OpenVMS versions prior to V7.2.) Older (though larger than the RZ29 series) disks such as the 9.1 GB RZ40 are supported with the HSZ40, assuming that sufficiently recent firmware is loaded into the HSZ40 controller. (And assuming that sufficient space and cooling is available, and the StorageWorks shelf is appropriate.) In North America, please call 1-800-STORWORK and speak to a Compaq StorageWorks representative.
