Software versions? (VMSINSTAL, PCSI)

The Question is:

 
VMI$VERSION in Vmsinstal contains the product version number which is a
3-digit number.  Is there anyway to overide this format ? (for example, I
prefer to have it as 5-digit number)

The Answer is :

 
  The prefered approach for software installations on recent OpenVMS VAX
  and OpenVMS Alpha versions is via PCSI.
 
  The three-digit version number and the format used are both hard-coded
