The Question is: Dear Wizard, I am evaluating a DS10 Alpha Server running VMS 7.2-1 and wish to perform a standalone backup of the system disk. The CD-ROM media supplied with the DS10 is 7.1-2 but this fails to boot from the IDE CD-ROM (hangs with VMS version banner in blue screen). I've also tried a VMS 7.2 CD with similiar results. The system disk currently has VMS 7.2-1 installed which seems to work ok with the IDE CD-ROM drive. Is there an Alpha Driver floppy which I need to dual boot with the CD-ROM? The Answer is : The easiest approach might be to configure and bootstrap via an available SCSI CD-ROM drive. The AlphaServer DS10 CD-ROM media has the ability to bootstrap via the V7.2-1 CD-ROM distribution -- the part number for this media kit is included in the OpenVMS FAQ. To bootstrap OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2, the V7.1-2 distribution kit and the "DS10 Boot Kit" is required -- this kit is often refered to as a SHIP kit, and it operates the floppy in conjunction with the CD-ROM media. This floppy should have been shipped with the system, for use when OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 is involved with this particular platform. The UPDATE, DQCONFIG, ACRTL, F11X, and GRAPHICS kits should be installed when running on OpenVMS V7.1-2. Ensure that the system console sees the device correctly, and does not see problems with either the IDE or the SCSI bus.
