HP OpenVMS Systemsask the wizard |
The Question is: I would like to boot OpenVMS on a Digital Personal Workstation 433au. When I try to boot the OpenVMS v7.2-1 CD-ROM it loads as far as the initial OpenVMS copyright banner and after about 30 seconds the CD-ROM spins down and the machine hangs. I can boot i nto SYSBOOT and alter parameters without any problems, but it refuses to continue past the copyright banner. This machine has run OpenVMS in the past without any problems (v7.1-1H2). I am running v7.0-10 of the SRM console firmware (the v5.5 firmware CD boots okay). The CD-ROM drive information from a 'show device' command is: dkb0.0.0.207.0 DKB0 TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6202B 1110 This machine has the Cypress PCI peripheral controller installed and will boot Digital UNIX v5.0 without any problems. -jon. The Answer is : It would appear that there is a problem with the CD-ROM drive or with the CD-ROM media or with the OpenVMS Alpha V7.2-1 bootstrap or with the peripheral devices present in this configuration. Common sources of problems include a CD-ROM drive not capable of supporting 512 byte block transfers, and graphics controllers that are not supported by OpenVMS. CD-ROM media problems are not unknown. There have also been problems with certain IDE CD-ROM combinations, the OpenVMS Wizard will assume this configuration is based on a SCSI bootstrap. The OpenVMS Wizard will further assume that the console bootstrap flags and the OS_TYPE are set up correctly for use with OpenVMS. The OpenVMS Wizard would encourage you to contact the Compaq Customer Support Center directly for assistance, as resolving this will require rather more information than is available via postings here.
