The Question is: In our business, I restore client OS's and data to my hardware. We have had a strange problem recently. When using VMS 7.2 (VAX or AXP) to restore a lower version of the OS, (v 7.1 or 6.2), several key files, and directories are not restored to the disk, and so the clients software will not boot. When I use a VMS 7.1 or VMS 6.2 system, I can resore and backup any file or files with no problems. Is there a bug in VMS 7.2 that has problems restoring a lower versions of the OS?? The Answer is : Without detailed configuration information, no answer is possible. You have not provided centrally necessary information, such as the exact command(s) used, the OpenVMS ECOs that have been applied, the storage configuration, the specific platform(s) involved, etc. The OpenVMS BACKUP utility savesets are compatible across versions, and BACKUP can be used to save and restore across multiple versions. The OpenVMS Wizard is not aware of any generic problem similar to what was reported, but has most definitely seen specific storage corruptions on occasion, and the occasional errant commands that can cause files to not be archived as expected. There are other aspects that can be involved here, such as the system disk capacity limits of the VAXstation 3100 series console (please see the OpenVMS FAQ for details) and the ODS-2 and ODS-5 volume (disk cluster size) enhancements that are available on OpenVMS V7.2 and later.
