The Question is: We are getting 4 new ES40 servers, running OpenVMS V7.3...Our current platform has a 6 node VAX cluster running VMS 5.5-2.... 1. Can we access data in RMS files on the VAX, from the ES40's? 2. Can we access data in RMS files on teh ES40 from the VAX? The Answer is : SYSUAF and other core RMS files used by OpenVMS are explicitly shared across all cluster members, thus the answer to both your questions is clearly "yes" -- fully distributed RMS file access is expected across all OpenVMS Cluster member nodes. If you upgrade your OpenVMS VAX systems to a more recent version, you can cluster the systems together -- this would be the salient restriction involved here, as OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 is simply too old to be a supported configuration for clustering with OpenVMS Alpha V7.3. (Please see the OpenVMS FAQ for the available OpenVMS VAX upgrade paths.) Existing discussions of this topic include (4874), (4889), (6745), (60), (1201), (3649) and likely various others.
