The Question is: I have a number of AlphaServer 4100 5/600 with 4 GB of memory running OpenVMS 7.2-1. The current dumpfiles are invalid. I would like to set up a dumpfile of 5,593,571 blocks with sysgen params dumpbug=1 & dumpstyle=10. Somewhere in the back of my mind there is a limit on the number extents a dumpfile can have. Is there a limit on the numner of extents a dumpfile can have? The Answer is : Yes, there are limits to the capabilities of OpenVMS Primitive File System (PFS), the file system that is used during the early portions of the OpenVMS bootstrap and thus for mapping the (non-DOSD) dumpfile. Specifically, you do not want a dumpfile with extension headers. The SYSGEN utility will assume the file being created or extended is a primary file, and should produce an error (HEADERFULL) if the file creation attempt requires extension headers.
