The Question is: WE HAVE A VAX 3800 AT WORK FOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR IN HOUSE USED. SINCE YESTERDAY, THE SYSTEM WAS DOWN AND CAN'T BOOT UP, I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS ? Q1. HOW CAN I CREATE A BOOT UP DISK, SINCE I HAVE ANOTHER VAX RUNNING. Q2. WHERE CAN I GET SUPPORT OR SERVICE IN CALGARY, ALBERTA CANADA THANKS! SPENCER The Answer is : Please contact the hp customer support center for these questions. Without specific details on the reason that the system cannot boot, the creation of an installation kit is premature. Given the great age of the MicroVAX 3800 series hardware, given the likeyhood that this system is (or was) running a very old (albiet unspecified) OpenVMS VAX version, and given that a lack of system backups can be inferred, the OpenVMS Wizard would initially assume that this problem is a result of failed hardware and would be best initially addressed through hardware repair. The need for software upgrades or software reinstallation may become a requirement, if there is a disk storage hardware failure and if there are no archives available. (This approach is not generally considered preferable as a first approach, due to the disruptions that can ensue.) If you wish to create a standalone BACKUP environment, you can use the command: @SYS$UPDATE:STABACKIT.COM The OpenVMS Wizard would encourage obtaining a software installation kit. While certainly possible, reconfiguring a restored copy of the system disk of another OpenVMS VAX system is rather more involved. For example, the steps that are involved in changing the nodename are listed in the OpenVMS FAQ. You would also likely have to at least partitially reconfigure local logical names, the network database, and other settings on the restored system disk to reflect the new configuration. Reinstalling from a distribution or repairing the existing system disk in place are both preferable. For pointers to hardware support information: http://www.openvms.compaq.com/serv_support.html
