The Question is: I am trying to do a standalone backup. I was using backup/image/ver/log dsa0: mka400:sys.bck/sav/rew It seemed to be working and after 30 minutes it failed. Can I use image with this version of VMS? The Answer is : OpenVMS Alpha has not provided standalone BACKUP starting with V6.1, when the older Standalone BACKUP environment was replaced with the bootable OpenVMS environment. BACKUP/IMAGE is completely supported and commonly used. Your BACKUP command is correct. Boot the OpeNVMS distribution kit, and exit to the $$$ DCL prompt. MOUNT/NOWRITE and perform the BACKUP from this environment, per the OpenVMS Alpha system management documentation. You can also use provided tools to create your own bootable environment, as well. See the OpenVMS documentation for the DCL command procedure SYS$SYSTEM:AXPVMS$PCSI_INSTALL_MIN.COM for details. Also consider using the V7.3-1 or other (more) current distribution kit to bootstrap and perform the BACKUP, as this will provide you with the most current OpenVMS and BACKUP software. Your OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 is rather old, and no longer supported -- at this writing, V7.2-2 and V7.3-1 are the prefered upgrade paths. For the most current information on current and prior support, please see the Prior Version Support (PVS) information in the OpenVMS FAQ. Also please also acquire and install the current mandatory ECO kits for your OpenVMS release. Without the details of the failure including the error message(s), device error reports, the the device(s) involved, and similar details, OpenVMS Wizard is unfortunately not able to provide more specific assistance.
