The Question is: I have a MicroVAX 3100 Model 40 and wish to install two 4GB disc's. Is this valid? Also the company tells me that they can only obtain 30GB SCSI disc's (third party). Is this valid. I have read the FAQ but cannot understand the details about max disk size, particulary details about Hardware restriction. Can you please help with this? The Answer is : OpenVMS VAX V7.2 and V7.3 can address disks this large and the console is likely able to bootstrap from disks this large, as stated in the OpenVMS FAQ. That said, the OpenVMS Wizard would be surprised to learn that this configuration has been tested, or that this configuration would be considered supported. The central questions here involve mounting brackets and the potential for (in)sufficient thermal cooling capabilities within the MicroVAX enclosure. The OpenVMS FAQ has a discussion of third-party SCSI devices, and the FAQ also has a pointer to the systems and options catalog (SOC) listings for various older platforms. The former will help with some details on support, and the latter can provide you with details of what storage hardware was tested within this system enclosure. The OpenVMS Wizard would tend to recommend use of an external SCSI enclosure for this purpose, and particularly an enclosure with sufficient cooling for the disks that are involved here. This solves the mounting bracket problems, and avoids thermal problems.
