Problem Booting from (unspecified) CD-ROM?

» close window

The Question is:

I am attempting to build a virgin 3100 with a VMS 6.2 Binaries CD-ROM. The
system boots from the CD and I get the Stand alone backup $ prompt but when I
try to issue the backup command it reports the CD-ROM as being offline and
 starts a mount verification
which never completes. Can you advise?

The Answer is :

Your VAX system has non-functional, invalid, or misconfigured
  hardware.

Most likely, an invalid or unterminated or otherwise errant SCSI
bus configuration, or your (unspecified) CD-ROM device is not one
that is supported by OpenVMS. (As referenced in the OpenVMS FAQ,
OpenVMS requires a CD-ROM device which supports 512-byte blocks.)

There are more than twenty different VAX systems with the number
3100 within the model name. (There are a number of DIGITAL systems
based on the MIPS processor which also use the 3100 numbering,
though these systems are obviously not supported by OpenVMS VAX.)
Various of these systems have differing SCSI and console limits.

Please contact your hardware services organization for assistance.
