Datatrieve cross-platform operations?

The Question is:

 
We are using Datatrieve 6.1 on a vax 4000-100
system.
 
I need to extract the data files (about 200) and
transfer them into a SQL server database.
 
I am not sure we can use FTP on our vax so I
guess I'll need to send the files using Kermit.
Once on the windows side I need to be able to
interpret the File Description (the _rec file)
and then use this to read the data file...
What about indexing? What is the format of an index
within the _dat file?
Do you have a BNF documentation for the file
description? Is it the SAME as COBOL's FD ?
Do you know of a product that I could use to
make my job simpler? I have read of a digital
datatrieve but it runs on alpha... Do you have
such a thing as a odbc driver that can connect
to a vax system on a network and allow a Windows
client to reach a datatrieve file?
 
For a question of disk space and cpu power I'd
prefer the processing to take place on the
Windows computer rather than the on the vax which
is still in production and being used by accounting. I don't want to slow it
 down too much. So I prefer to ship the file day by day
and update the SQL server's file...
 
Any sugegstions? Hints or ideas where I can look?
Ideally I would dream of a C++ class that can
process a datatrieve file :)
