Java and COBOL?

The Question is:

 
we are going to install a new Compaq Alpha server for OpenVMS and have both
 Cobol compiler and JVM available on the server. The applications were written
 in Cobol. I was asked to add custom functions written in Java to the
 applications written in Cobol. M
y question is how can I call Java from Cobol.
