The Question is: I would like to know if there is a maximum number of files on an OpenVMS disk-volume. The volume might be a any RAID-set including a single disk. The Answer is : Please review the information on file sizes and maximum volume sizes included in the OpenVMS FAQ -- the most relevent limit is the number of headers that the particular volume is initialized to, of course, and the total and theoretical volume sizes that are permissible. (Please see the FAQ and the SHOW DEVICE/FULL and INITIALIZE/HEADER commands for details on these areas.) The theoretical limit on the number of files on a single volume is the capacity of an internal 24 bit field, though the current volume capacity and/or the theoretical volume capacity limits are almost always reached long before the theoretical maximum-files limit is reached.
