SID, SYS_TYPE and System-Dependent? (KA41)

The Question is:

 
How does VMS decide that my MicroVAX is a KA41 (console reports a KA41-D) when
 NetBSD and Linux report it as a KA42 ?
 
Does VMS decode the SIDEX register and decide that way? If so, what magic bits
 is it looking at? If not - how is it working it out?
 
 
 
 
 

The Answer is :

 
  Please contact a NetBSD or Linux Wizard for information on how those
  operating systems might have identified these VAXstation 3100 series
  and MicroVAX 3100 series systems.  (It would appear these operating
  systems have implemented the CVAX family code and part of the SYS_TYPE
  value, but not the system-dependent portion of SYS_TYPE in bits 8-15.)
 
  The KA41-D is assigned to the MicroVAX 3100 Model 10e and 20e series
  system, and apparently correctly identified by OpenVMS VAX -- though
  you do not indicate the type of system you see, unfortunately.
 
  The three variants in the PVAX family are the KA42 series using 0 in
  the system-dependent field, a faster KA42 variant using 1 in the field,
  and the KA41 variant using a 2 in the field.
