Method #1 (Red Hat Linux 7.3, 8.0, or 9) use the nousb option as follows:
"linux text nousb"

In short -- boot the CDROM with 'linux text nousb' and the RH9 install proceeds normally. I also put "nousb" on the kernel config commandline, just in case (using the kernel-smp RPM as well).
Method #2 (Red Hat Linux 7.3, 8.0, or 9) disable the embedded NIC through SCU (System configuration Utility).
