System Specifications

Dual PPRO 200 (SMP works fine)
No other IDE/SCSI devices (other than the following)
Smart-2/P Array Controller with 5 4.3GB old style hard drives in one Raid 5 array. 1 logical drive.

Here are the steps that I used to create a 2500 that will boot from Hard disk.

  1. Install 5.3 SmartStart - Make sure you do a clear system first (System Erase)!!
  2. Root RedHat 8.0 - Watch this boot and wait for the BOOT: prompt, If you miss it and it goes to not enough memory, start over!!

  3. At the BOOT: prompt enter "linux mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=191M@1M"
    (Adjust to your actual memory)
Also the shorter string should work too (this ex. shows 192MB): "linux mem=175@16M"

  4. Hit Next at Welcome Screen
  5. Pick Language and Click Next
  6. Pick Keyboard and Click Next
  7. Pick Mouse Type and Click Next
  8. Pick Custom Install
  9. Select Automatic Partition and Click Next
  10. Select to Remove all Linux Partitions and click Yes

  11. say "yes" I want to do this on warning message

  12. Review partition table, Note the partition # of the /boot partition, you will need this later.

  13. Should be /dev/ida/c0d0p1

  14. Change Boot Loader to LILO (Could not get grub to work)

  15. Select Configure Advanced boot Loader Options and click next

  16. Install Boot Loader on: Select /dev/ida/c0d0p1 First Sector of Boot Partition

  17. Select Force LBA32
Add " mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=191M@1M" to the Genteral kernel Parameters and click next
Say "Force LBA32" on warning message

  18. Configure Network
  19. Select Firewall options
  20. Select Additional Language
  21. Select Time Zone
  22. Set Root Password and add at least one user
  23. Select Authentication Configuration
  24. Select packages (Everything at the bottom) and click next.

  25. Wait a very long time

  26. Insert Disk 2

  27. Wait a very long time

  28. Insert Disk 3

  29. Wait a very long time

  30. Select to create a boot disk
