The SMTP agent first tries looking up an MX record in the DNS for the destination host. It looks like one of the nameservers for your domain is returning a "server failure" status for MX lookups on that host. You might try upgrading NETLIB to the latest version; I fixed a problem in NETLIB that was causing it to interpret that kind of failure into a "no such host" (ENDOFFILE) error. -Matt -- Matthew Madison | MadGoat Software | PO Box 556, Santa Cruz, CA 95061 USA madison@madgoat.com http://www.madgoat.com ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Tue, 21 May 2002 07:31:04 -0700 Date: Tue, 21 May 2002 09:30:35 -0600 From: system@niuhep.physics.niu.edu Reply-To: MX-List@MadGoat.com To: MX-List@MadGoat.com Message-ID: <00A0E432.A00CDB0B.139@niuhep.physics.niu.edu> Subject: RE: MX can't find DNS? We've been running MX 4.2 (AXP) for a long time with no significant problems. Some months back, we upgraded to OpenVMS V7.2-2 from 7.1-2 . This caused no noticable problems with MX. However, we discovered that the version of UCX we were running (4.2) was not supported under 7.2-2, and was causing problems with some other applications. (NTDS, actually.) On upgrading to Compaq TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.1, MX started displaying some problems with outgoing SMTP mail. Messages were only delivered to destinations where a DNS lookup on the destination gave a host that would accept SMTP mail. The following is a log-file from a failed mail [[[ 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.47 Processing queue entry number 14 on node JOHNNY 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.49 Recipient: , route=virgin.net 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.49 SMTP_SEND: looking up host name virgin.net 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.49 SMTP_SEND: DNS_MXLOOK status is 00002094 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.58 SMTP_SEND: Attempting to start session with virgin.net [194.168.54.50] 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.58 -- failed, status=00000294 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.58 SMTP_SEND: Failed, sts=00000294 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.58 SMTP send failed, sts=0C27804A, sts2=00000294 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.58 Recipient status=0C27804A for 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.59 1 rcpts need retry, next try 17-MAY-2002 21:30:56.59 17-MAY-2002 21:00:56.59 *** End of processing pass *** ]]] DNS_MXLOOK is failing with %SYSTEM-F-UNREACHABLE, remote node is not currently reachable MX_SMTP is then attempting to deliver mail to host virgin.net - which doesn't accept smtp mail. If you want to send to a numeric IP address, you should enclose the address in square brackets (e.g., user@[1.2.3.4]); that's the syntactically correct form. If you use this form, MX should bypass any host name lookups and attempt to contact the SMTP server at that address directly. -Matt -- Matthew Madison | MadGoat Software | PO Box 556, Santa Cruz, CA 95061 USA madison@madgoat.com http://www.madgoat.com ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Tue, 21 May 2002 15:38:15 -0700 Date: Tue, 21 May 2002 15:38:11 -0700 From: Matt Madison Reply-To: MX-List@MadGoat.com To: MX-List@MadGoat.com Message-ID: <00A0E465.FA7BBA31.24@MadGoat.Com> Subject: RE: SMTP outbound/DNS problem on MX 4.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" >We've been running MX 4.2 (AXP) for a long time with no significant problems. >Some months back, we upgraded to OpenVMS V7.2-2 from 7.1-2 .
