But I have seen other=20 lists, or I belong to, with thousands of members where that just wouldn=B4t= =20 be an option if you don=B4t have people on alert all the time. The annoying= =20 autoreplies occur there every now and then and they seem to come from all=20 kinds of clients, mostly Outlook and Eudora. But the difference is that=20 they occur only once, so I think it must have something to do with the=20 listserver settings. And removing people is hard when you are away yourself. Thanks again but I would like to find a different solution than just=20 removing users, that is, if one is possible with this software. I really=20 like the straighforwardness of MX and the way you very quick and easy can=20 set up a list for whatever purpose. MX means Mail Exchange and is (at least) two things. 1.) A software running on OpenVMS (with every TCPIP stack via the NETLIB library) acting as a _good_ SMTP server (MTA) with very good AntiSPAM capabilities, as a Listserver and as a plugin for the VMSmail (and DECWmail) mail client (MUA). This newsgroup is for this software written by MadGoat Software (http://www.madgoat.com) 2) A Resource Record in the BIND/DNS server (RFC1032-RFC1035) for the mail destination of the domain. This RR requires a name and a priority. You can enter more than one MX RR for a given domain and the MTA (the one with the DNS client) uses then the priority in this MX RR to find out which mailserver then to send the mails to (lower prio value means higher priority). This is what your ISP meant. He probably entered two MX RR with different prios pointing to two different SMTP servers and the one with the lower prio is the MX Backup because it is only used when the other, the higher prio SMTP server is not reachable. Go back to your ISP and discuss who is going to setup the (one or two) SMTP servers. If you don't know the difference between the two points above (or never heard of MX RR) then you are probably not the first choice for setting up the SMTP server ;-) I would recommend using a VMS system (used VAX, or better used Alpha h/w, seen on EBAY for $20 and above) with the VMS hobbyist license (become a DECUS member at http://www.decus.de for free, then get a VMS hobbyist license at http://www.montagar.com/hobbyist for free) and buy the MX software license for $499 at http://www.madgoat.com. Then you have a really good MTA (with AntiSPAM) without virus problems (if you can resist in using Outlook on PC nearby and use MOZILLA 1.1 on VMS itself) -- Peter "EPLAN" LANGSTOEGER Network and OpenVMS system specialist E-mail peter@langstoeger.at A-1030 VIENNA AUSTRIA I'm looking for (a) Network _and_ VMS Job(s) ================================================================================ Archive-Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 04:29:38 -0700 Subject: Re: HELP!
