This update eliminates the "Spoofed Route Pointer" and "Fragmented IGMP Packet" vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows 98 and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletins MS99-038 and MS 99-034. Download now to help prevent a malicious user from using source routing to obtain network information through your Windows 98 computer, and to protect your computer's performance when it encounters fragmented data packets.

The "Spoofed Route Pointer" vulnerability could allow a malicious user to obtain network information by performing source routing with an affected Windows 98 computer, even if source routing has been disabled. Installing this update eliminates this vulnerability and provides additional control over source routing. For more information about this vulnerability, read Microsoft Security Bulletin MS99-038.

The "Fragmented IGMP Packet" vulnerability exists in TCP/IP stack implementations of Windows 98. If fragmented or malformed, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) data packets can cause a variety of problems in Windows 98, ranging from poor system performance to system failure. For more information about this vulnerability, read Microsoft Security Bulletin MS99-034.
