Four Ways to Set Up an Internet Connection

Can't wait to get online? After all, that's the reason you got yourself a new computer, isn't it? We've got some good news for you. Windows Me is designed to streamline the many complex steps it can take to reach the Internet, making it a simple, straightforward matter to get online and begin to explore the Web, exchange e-mail with friends and family, and more.

First steps
Before you do anything else, make sure your system is functioning properly. Start your computer and check to see that all of the connected pieces are working, including your monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If you plan on using a dial-up service to connect to the Internet, make sure your phone line is plugged into the modem in your computer, and that your phone is giving you a clear dial tone.

Note   If you have chosen another kind of Internet access service, such as ISDN, cable modem, or DSL, your Internet service provider (ISP) provides you with the information and support you need to connect to the Internet. In many cases, a service person will visit your home to install necessary hardware or software. Be sure to keep a phone number for your ISP handy, in case you run into problems.

Ready, set, go
Windows Me gives you more than one way to access the Internet. Here are four options.

Get an MSN account
If this is the first time you will be connecting to the Internet, or if you currently don’t have an ISP, consider using MSN. Setup is quick, easy, and starts right on your computer desktop.

  • Click the Setup MSN Internet Access icon on your desktop, and then follow the instructions.

Transfer an existing ISP account using the Internet Connection wizard
If you already have an ISP that you plan to keep, it's easy to configure that information on your computer with Windows Me.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Internet Connection Wizard.
  2. Click I want to transfer my existing Internet account to this computer, and then click Next.
  3. Follow the instructions for setting up your dial-up properties and detecting your modem.

Set up a new account with an ISP in your area
Windows Me makes setting up a new account with a new ISP easy, too. Remember, it's a good idea to call the company ahead of time for information you will need when setting up your dial-up properties. The ISP can also help you troubleshoot any problems you may encounter.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Internet Connection Wizard.
  2. Click I want to sign up for a new Internet account, and then click Next.
  3. Follow the instructions for setting up your dial-up properties and detecting your modem.

Choose an ISP from the Online Services folder
Looking for an ISP but not sure where to start? Windows Me comes with all the information you need to set up an account with several well-known services.

  • Click the Online Services folder on the desktop. (You may also find it in the C:\\Program Files folder.) Click the ISP of your choice, and follow the instructions.
