BENCH PERFORMANCE RECORDS FOR WINDOWS NT SERVERS

.Digital Addresses Customer Demand for High Performance, Scalable Solutions...

MAYNARD, Mass., January 26, 1998 - Digital Equipment Corporation today announced industry-leading performance results for Lotus Domino. The benchmark test was performed on a DIGITAL Server 7300R system running Windows NT Server and Lotus Domino Revision 4.5.3 software.

Three separate NotesBench tests were conducted: the Mail Only test, the Mail and Shared Database test (MailDB) and the Groupware B test. The benchmark tests were conducted by Digital using Lotus NotesBench, and were audited by KMDS Technical Associates. Lotus NotesBench provides a methodology and tools for measuring Notes and Domino Server performance. Digital is a charter member of the NotesBench consortium, an independent organization dedicated to providing standardized Domino and Notes performance information to enable customers to evaluate vendors.

NotesBench results can be found at http://www.notesbench.org. This site includes detailed reports to enable customers to make informed choices for their Lotus Domino servers.

The scalability and manageability of the DIGITAL Server 7300R enables customers to host more users on fewer systems, consolidating servers and reducing operational costs. Digital's four-processor DIGITAL Server 7300R system has eclipsed all previous NotesBench NT Server results. The DIGITAL Server 7300R can support 17 percent more NotesMail users than the Compaq ProLiant 7000, and 80 percent more Notes MailDB users that the IBM NetFinity7000 for comparable cost.

"Working through its channels partners, Digital provides a full line of scalable Windows NT servers that deliver strong price/performance results to support Lotus Domino installations of all sizes," said Jacqueline Kahle, Digital vice president of Mail and Messaging, Worldwide Sales and Marketing. "For example, the DIGITAL Server 7300R delivers the highest Lotus Domino performance on Windows NT Server in the industry. DIGITAL Server 7300R customers gain a uniform, highly scalable, seamless growth path as the number of Lotus Domino users increases and additional applications are added."

"The Digital and Lotus partnership combines the strength of two industry leaders committed to delivering to mutual customers business-critical, collaborative groupware applications,'' said Pat Hume, director of Strategic Alliances at Lotus. ``Digital Servers and Lotus Domino together  provide powerful, cost-effective solutions that meet the present and anticipated needs of the full range of Domino customer environments.''

Digital Servers provide high-performance, scalable platforms that have the headroom to grow in anticipation of increased future requirements. Domino, Lotus' interactive Web server, combined with other usiness-critical applications running on Digital's powerful servers provides:

Consolidation of Lotus Domino server environments. A single Digital Server can replace many other existing servers. This server consolidation simplifies network management, allowing administrators to easily add Lotus Domino users, as well as other applications, resulting in significant cost savings.

Reduced network complexity. Fewer servers translates to increased administrator productivity. Also, ServerWorks systems management software, included with every Digital Server simplifies server and network management.

Lower acquisition and network administration costs. Customers benefit from increased operational efficiency and reduced cost of ownership. These savings may help a company's bottom line and give it an edge over competitors.

High Availability Solution for Lotus Domino Users Business-critical applications such as Lotus Domino require continuous availability. Using the customer's choice of Microsoft Cluster Server, a component of Microsoft Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition or Digital Clusters for Windows NT Server, high availability is ensured.
