I had problems with getting the X server to start up with my customized
kernel (made by doconfig) - while the genvmunix kernel worked fine.
Turns out that I had to include a controller vga line in my configuration
file. After including the entry
controller vga0 at * slot ? vector vgaintr
and doing another doconfig, the X server starts up with my customized kernel
too. Thanks to DEC CSC Norway for pointing this out. I don't know why it
wasn't found by default, but I don't care as long as it works now.
Jacek Skorupski <jsk_at_it.pw.edu.pl> suggested that I try to start the
X server manually from a video terminal instead of the console, pointing
out that you can see error messages on a terminal that you won't catch
on the console.
The other issues remain unsolved.
