Friends;
I am running OSF/1 3.0 on a 3000/800 with 30,000 accounts.
I am using UFS exclusively and have quotas enabled.
I upgraded from 2.0 to 3.0 a month ago.
This is a student email machine and the upgrade took place during winter
break. Today, my first day back in a few weeks and the day before classes
start, I had two problems;
A user was experiencing problems with the mail application. As super user
I attempted to manipulate some of his files and got the error message
"too many users". This message appeared under csh or bourne shell. At the
same time the above error was occuring the console log window reported :
"vmunix: dquot table is full" and then every few minutes "last message
repeated X times" where X varied from 4 to over 100.
I called DEC support. In the meantime the problem went away. I was able
to delete some of the problem user's files and test their account, it now
worked fine. I also noted that the console messages stopped.
The user in question was not over quota and the file system is only 12% full.
DEC called back and indicated that the problem may be because the total
disk space that users could use under their quotas may be exceeding the
physical disk space.
I am oversubscribed in terms of total accounts and physically available disk
space, but not all accounts are being used. I had assumed that quotas would
not take into account the total physical space available, but would only
enforce quotas on an individual. DEC is not clear on this.
The number of users has not increased since before my upgrade to 3.0.
Does anyone know;
1) exactly under what conditions the "dquot table full"
message is generated.
2) whether the quota mechanism cares whether the potential disk consumption
exceeds physical availability.
and for future reference
3) whether the quotactl call works under the advanced file system. The
documentation is not clear. The man page says it is for UFS file systems, but
the vquotaon man page references qutoactl. I use C code to mantain user
quotas.
