The configuration:
AlphaServer 1000 4/200 with 4xrz28 fitted in the build-in Storageworks
cabinet, the disks controlled by the Storageworks RAID Array 200
subsystem (SWXCR-EB-3 channel controller), and the CD-ROM and DAT
player controlled by the onboard NCR SCSI controller. Software being
used is OSF/1 T3.0B-3 that came with the system.
The problem:
After installing the root-partition part of OSF/1 from the CD-ROM on
re0 (after configuring the RAID controller and initalizing the
RAID-5 disk set), and while trying to boot from the RAID disk to
continue installing OSF/1, the following occurs:
Alpha boot: available memory from ...
<other normal console-messages omitted>
...
CMD memory lost
Possible software problem
Impossible cond detected
...
bootdevice_parser: unknown protocol name 'RAID'
setconf: bootdevice parser failed to translate bootdevice
RAID 1 2 0 0 0 0 0
panic: bootdevice_parser failed
The system then halts back to the boot prompt. Notice that I am
able to install the parts of the OS required to boot from the RAID-5
disk without any ado - it's when I'm booting from the RAID-5 disk
the machine panics.
OSF/1 installs fine on the same system when the disks are controlled
by the inbuild SCSI controller.
All help greatly appreciated!
