bootdevice parser error

Hi folks,

        Help needed.

machine: dec2100_a500 with one cpu, 128 Mbytes, 3chan raid controller.
re0 is one disk - JOBD, re1 is one disk - JOBD, re2 is a RAID 5 array of 4
disks.

The system was running OSF1-3.0 . An distribution disk arrived,
labled 3.0B . Rashly I decided to install it. I did a /sbin/installupdate
and answered a few questions. Eventually it said it would shutdown and
reboot to configure the devices. It shutdown ok, but on rebooting it said:

normal stuff up to configuring xcr0, and reporting the disks.

bootdevice_parser: unknown protocol name 'RAID'
setconf: Bootdevice parser failed to translate bootdevice RAID 1 5 0 0 1 0 0

panic (cpu 0): setconf: bootdevice parser failed

DUMP: No dump device.

halted cpu 0

I booted from the 3.0B cdrom and did an advanced installation (onto
a different disk - re2 this time) and got exactly the same problem at the
first reboot.

Attempting to boot a copy of the pre upgrade disk (on re1) gave the
same error!

Copying a known working root partition from another machine gives
the same error.

So I tried upgrading the firmware. Still same error.

Anyone know what I've done wrong? Or better yet, how to fix it?

Currently I can only boot off the cdrom... No other boot works...

        Any help gratefully appreciated.
