Hello
I have three DEC Alphas. One of them has a very
large disk that I am using for all the users home
directories. Currently users work on all three systems
and the one with the large disk is NFS server to two
clients. Right now I am maintaining an /etc/passwd
file on each system that are for the most part identical.
This allows users read/write access to their own
directories on the server. Now I am getting requests
from LINUX, Convex, and Sun users for access to this
NFS server. The /etc/passwd files on these other
systems all have different user ID numbers and group
numbers and the users can't write to a directory on
the server.
Do I need to align all passwd files so the users have the
same ID and GROUP on each system?
What are people doing to authorize users from multiple
platforms access to a NFS server?
I am using DNS and do not have NIS PCNFSD or
yp running, and don't want to get into Kerberos.
Thanks for any help!
